This list was the toughest yet. I have always been a huge Beatles fan.The incredible amount of great songs they made in a relatively short period of time, basically 1962-1969, just blows away anyone else in the history of pop music. Hands down. I originally had over 40 songs that I considered for the list, here's the twenty best:
20.) Penny Lane - #1 hit - March '67 - A great song about childhood memories in Liverpool.
19.) If I Fell - from 'Something New' - A great love song...
18.) Yellow Submarine - #2 hit - Oct. '66 - Ringo's "silly" song
17.) Help! - #1 hit - Sept. 65 - A song about John Lennon's anxiety over the Beatles' huge success.
16.) Got To Get You Into My Life - #7 hit - July '76 - Released six years after the break-up, and still a smash. Loved the horn sound..
15.) I Want To Hold Your Hand - #1 hit - March '64 - Their 1st #1 hit, let the screaming begin!
14.) The Long And Winding Road - #1 hit - June '70 - Their last #1 hit, a sad but glorious ending of their run of hits.
13.) Lady Madonna - #4 hit - May '68 - Paul McCartney's Fats Domino impersonation about the tough life of a single mother.
12.) Eight Days A Week - #1 hit - Feb. '65 - A funny Ringo Starr remark became their 7th #1 hit in 12 months.
11.) Golden Slumbers Medley - from 'Abbey Road' - Based on a Thomas Dekker lullaby and written about the pressure of continuing their amazing success.
10.) Hey Jude - #1 hit - Sept. '68 - Their biggest hit(9 weeks at #1) Written for and about Julian Lennon, dealing with his parents divorce.
9.) A Day In The Life - from Sgt. Pepper - A combination of a John song with a Paul song created that classic.
8.) Please Please Me - #3 hit - Apr. '64 - John wrote it with Roy Orbison in mind...
7.) In My Life - from 'Rubber Soul', John wrote it about his childhood, but changed a lot of the words...
6.) She Loves You - #1 hit - Apr. '64 - Actually released months before 'I Want To Hold Your Hand' but was their 2nd #1 hit.
5.) Revolution - #12 hit - Sept '68 - The B side of Hey Jude and the song that seemed to fit the times perfectly.
4.) Here Comes The Sun - from 'Abbey Road' - recorded the day I was born 7/6/69, and a great George Harrison-written song.
3.) We Can Work It Out - #1 hit - Jan. '66 - A true Lennon/McCartney combination as they both wrote just about half of the song, each...
2.) Something - #1 hit - Oct. '69 - The B side to 'Come Together' and an amazing George song. George had Ray Charles in mind when he wrote it...
1.) Yesterday - #1 hit - Oct. '65 - Really was just Paul, and a string section, but can anyone argue with it being my favorite, and a lot people's favorite Beatles song ever....
