I'd like to post something on here every day, if possible. I think that's the best way to keep you guys interested in this blog. The truth is, I may not come up with something that I judge to be interesting enough to write about every single day. What I will do on these days, like today, is post top ten lists of artists that I think are universally known and appreciated by most of you. Today, I'll start with who I consider to be my personal favorite, Billy Joel. I saw him in concert three times and have virtually every CD of him. My top ten started with 30 songs and it was tough to narrow it down. But, here they are, and notice that most of them were never released as singles:
10.) The Entertainer - Only a #34 hit(mostly because top 40 radio didn't like the line "laid all kinds of girls") but a great story song about suddenly being famous and the pressure to stay that way.
9.) Goodnight Saigon - One of the very few post-Vietnam songs to get a lot of attention, and pay attention to the sad lack of respect for those veterans
8.) We Didn't Start The Fire - An incredible history lesson of the first 40 years of Billy Joel's life, and it hit #1
7.) River Of Dreams - An incredibly catchy song and big hit in '93, in between all that grunge and Mariah Carey on the radio then.
6.) Zanzibar - A great story song from the 52nd St. album. Any song that mentions Muhammad Ali, Pete Rose and the Yankees, gets my attention.
5.) Vienna - A song from The Stranger about the perils of living too fast. It sounds like a lot of our lives, including mine...
4.) Miami 2017 - This song has really grown on me. I didn't like the doomsday of New York scenario until 9/11 happened. His playing it at the Memorial Concert at MSG made me realize how special a song it is.
3.) Prelude/Angry Young Man - The absolute story of my younger life and that piano playing, incredible!
2.) New York State Of Mind - How can any native New Yorker, especially one that lived away from it, not appreciate how special this song is.
1.) Scenes From An Italian Restaurant - My favorite, not because I'm half Italian, but because I heard it a zillion times at every bar I went to between the ages of 21 and 30 and never got tired of hearing it. Also because I knew a "Brenda and Eddie, that had it already"...
